How You Can Visit the Johnny Cash House

MysteriousDestinationsMagazine.com’s sister company Mysterious Destinations, a tour company that specializes in guiding groups in the exploration of the unknown and unexplained, had already finalized plans for their 2012 Western Caribbean Expedition when they learned about the Johnny Cash house in Jamaica.

But even with the finalized plans, there was no question… We were going to the Johnny Cash house one way or another, and we were going to conduct our own paranormal explore when we got there.

But how to accomplish those objectives in the limited amount of time left before departure on the cruise ship that would be our base of operations was bit more challenging.

Even though it’s close to two major cruise ports and several large resorts, it seemed that public access to the Johnny Cash house on Cinnamon Hill was one of Jamaica’s best kept secrets.

We were unable to locate any tour operators making excursions there, and the Johnny Cash house wasn’t listed among the shore trips offered on the cruise ship.

A Google search gave us links that told us all about the house, including one that ominously noted the house wasn’t open to the public, but no ideas on how to get in.

Finally, on the Rose Hall website – which is filled with loads of content – we found a page offering tours of Cinnamon Hill, the long-time name of the estate. Please click here to view that page. We also learned that until recently, the house had been closed to the public.

We made an inquiry and received a polite reply on how to book the house directly. But we decided instead to work with our travel partners at ShoreTrips.com, which is always our preference when making international bookings (especially when guiding guests). Sure, it costs a bit more than the base fee, but having an expert to handle international monetary transactions and ensure that the managers at the location are clear on our intentions of conducting a paranormal explore there makes it an investment, not an expense. As mentioned before, the Johnny Cash house at Cinnamon Hill is near two cruise ports and several resorts.

The closest cruise ports are Montego Bay to the west and Falmouth to the east, both about 20 minutes away by car. The cruise port at Ocho Rios is further to the west and nearly 90 minutes away by car. That’s a three-hour round trip, so you’ll need to watch your time if coming from Ocho Rios (nothing worse than missing a cruise ship departure time).

The major cruise lines calling on Montego Bay (at the time of this posting) are Carnival (sailing out of New Orleans), Holland America (sailing out of Fort Lauderdale), and Norwegian (sailing out of New Orleans).

The cruise port at Falmouth is one of the newest in the world, built by and exclusively serviced by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines from a variety embarkation ports including New Orleans, Galveston, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale.

The major cruise lines calling on Ocho Rios (at the time of this posting) are Carnival (sailing out of Fort Lauderdale), Holland America (sailing out of Fort Lauderdale), Princess (sailing out of Fort Lauderdale) and Oceania (sailing out of Miami).

Some of the noteworthy resorts nearby include Sunset Beach (click here for a link) and the Iberostar Grand Hotel, Rose Hall (click here for a link). However, there are many other choices, both nearby and elsewhere on the island. If you would like add a bit of the paranormal to your stay, try Noel Coward’s Blue Harbour in the Ocho Rios area, which is said to haunted by its namesake (click here for a link).
